The Japanese art of Suminagashi

Suminagashi uses ink, soap and water to make the most beautiful and relaxing art.

This repetitious motion reminds us of Karate kid’s “wax on wax off.”

Only this time it’s brushes in brushes out.

You will learn about the materials and the process before you start rhythmically making you patterns.

Once you have filled your tray you will dip your rice paper into the vat picking up your print.

This technique is not marbling even though it looks similar.

Suminagashi unlike marbling does not rely on any additive to the water.
